Looking for Langston out on video. Water Bearer Films has released Isaac Julien's previously unavailable film, Looking for Langston on home video. The video marks the sixth release in Water Bearer Films line of "Festival Favorites" targeted for the gay and lesbian community.

Langston Hughes is considered America's premiere African-American poet. Writing during the time of the Harlem Renaissance, Hughes was able to capture the mood and texture of the first great cultural ascension of the African-American movement in this country. Today, Hughes' work is required reading for many public and private schools across the nation.

Isaac Julien's first feature film, Looking for Langston, pre-dates his most current theatrical feature, the critically acclaimed Young Soul Rebels. Swooning, stylish and sexy, the film is a musing mediation on the black poet Langston Hughes.

Across its multi-texured elements, the film reclaims Langston Hughes as an important black gay voice in American culture. Enlisting the poetry of Essex Hemphill and Bruce Nugent and dedicated to the memory of James Baldwin, Looking for Langston is a lyrical exploration of black and white gay identities. Original footage of the Cotton Club during the 1920's and period blues numbers set the scene for this examination of attitudes toward homosexuality then and now.

How are the candidates on AIDS? Mobilization Against AIDS is attempting to organize AIDS-focused meetings with as many as 200 congressional candidates nationwide before the November elections.

To accomplish this ambitious task, the California-based AIDS lobbying organization is seeking people across the country who care enough about improving U.S. AIDS policies that they're willing to meet with candidates. MAA will guide them in preparation for their visits by supplying "how-to" lobbying information.

MAA was spurred to action after finding that virtually no congressional candidates have had in-depth meetings with constituents to discuss HIV-AIDS issues, according to executive director Paul Boneberg. In fact, Boneberg said, no such meetings have taken place in the two districts of the San Francisco Bay Area--one of the nation's hardest-hit regions.

"Once a candidate is elected, their attention shifts and their time becomes closely guarded," Boneberg explained. "Now's the time to get their attention and tell them how serious an issue AIDS is for their districts."

After interested people call MAA at 800-24-LOBBY, staffers will supply information and expertise, help arrange the meetings, and introduce others in the same district who wish to participate.
